Santa Fe was a stop on the historic Santa Fe Railway line. Recently, a relatively modern development has occurred near the historic rail station called The Rail Yard. The development of this area correlates to the opening of the Rail Runner train system that goes south to Albuquerque, with stops along the way. Developed as an alternative to driving to Albuquerque and it's international airport, this commuter train is still developing. However, once completed, properties that lie along the route of the train will gain in value. This includes the new commercial and residential properties making up The Rail Yard.

Further south of town, you'll find established developments of single family homes, townhouses, condominiums and apartments in various price points and attracting full or part time residents of Santa Fe who do not feel it necessary to live close to the Plaza.
